Essential Elements for Developing a Strong Thesis Proposal

For each department of study, the thesis proposal is quite different so it is important to give careful emphasis on the guidance of the advisor at the time of writing the proposal. One must use the template for thesis proposal, if the department has made on available that gives specific elements one must include the way the proposal should be formatted. However, some fundamental elements can necessarily be included in the thesis proposal:

Your thesis proposal should answer your research question

Your research responds to some of the real-world problems or to some of the unanswered questions. Some of the recent historical events have paved the path for new threats, challenges or needs. The research question redrafts the object of the research in the form of a question, ending with a question mark. The research question should be clear and direct and there is no binding of only research question. Depending on the topic and field of your study, you may have more than one research question.

It should answer the significance of your research

In explaining how the research you are proposing is significant, the response you are giving to the question is “So what”. Be sure and clear about your answering your research question in a way that it is convincing about the solutions to real world scholarly issues or the specific problems you have identified.

The coverage of your research topic in existing scholarly literature

The thesis proposal may require a literature review, particularly those who have shaped the question you are asking and your approach towards answering it. In your thesis, you have to review a great deal of literature so that you understand what the scholars who have researched on the topic you know and what gap will be filling through your research.

How will you design your research? What methodology will you apply?

Your proposal should give a clear framework of how your research is structured and the way to go about it. Identify the choices you have made for the execution of your research and this should be in alignment with your field of study and the available resources for the same. Finally, express clearly the stages and steps that are involved in the conducting of your research in a sequential manner so that it is evident that you have the entire plan chalked out crisply and clearly.

The chapterisation scheme of your thesis

The thesis proposal requires you to consider carefully how many chapters will be written by you and how each chapter will be contributing to the document. This structure, of course has the scope for modification, if required, during the thesis writing phase.
